Microbiology

Overview

Department of Microbiology performs academic and diagnostic services. The subject is taught to 2nd MBBS students as per CBME guidelines. Post graduation (MD) was started in 2020 and there are 12 students perusing MD in the department.

Department of Microbiology is an NABL accredited laboratory for all the tests in  scope of Serology, Microbiology &molecular testing. This was the first government laboratory to achieve NABL accreditation in molecular testing in Gujarat. It serves as DPHL (district public Health lab) for Ahmedabad rural area that caters to outbreak investigations and environmental surveillance for the villages falling under Ahmedabad rural.

It’s a Model diagnostic laboratory for Gujarat for HBV & HCV viral load testing under NVHCP (National Viral Hepatitis Control Program) program.

Department was first to initiate HIV 1 Viral load testing for HIV positive patients under NACP. This lab is one of the four labs operational in Gujarat & caters 13 ART centres from North & Central Gujarat.

We are also one of the 29surveillance lab across India for surveillance for viral Hepatitis under NPSVH( National Program For Surveillance of Viral Hepatitis) as part of MOU with NCDC.

Department serves as a training centre for NVHCP and HIV-1 viral load testing for state of Gujarat.

Along with BSL 2 labs, department is also equipped with BSL 3 laboratory.

It’s a key department for infection control & prevention activities in the hospital. It carries out various trainings for hospital staff, AMR data analysis and dissemination to clinicians, environmental sampling, audits and participations in policy formulations for infection prevention in the hospital.

We are a participant lab for AMR surveillance program under GUJSAR run by CDC.
