Overview

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND SUBJECT TRAINING

GOAL: - The aim of teaching the undergraduatestudents in Forensic Medicine is to impart such knowledge and skill that mayenable him/her to manage common medico-legal problems in day to day practice.He/She shall acquire competence for post-mortem diagnosis based on history,physical examination and relevant observations during autopsy. 

OBJECTIVES: - During the training, studentsshould acquire following competencies, knowledge and skills so that they can practicecommunity medicine after graduation.

COMPETENCIES: The undergraduate mustdemonstrate –

1.      Understandingmedico-legal responsibilities of physicians in primary and secondary caresettings.

2.      Understandingthe ration approach to the investigation of crime, based on scientific andlegal principles.

3.      Abilityto manage the medical and legal issues in case of poisoning / overdose.

4.      Understandingthe medico-legal framework of medical practice and medical negligence.

5.      Understandingthe code of conduct and medical ethics.

KNOWLEDGE: At the end of thecourse the student shall be able to -

1.       Identifyand document medico-legal problems in a hospital and general practice.

2.       Identifymedico-legal responsibilities of a medical man in various hospital situations.

3.       Diagnoseand manage basic poisoning cases in the community.

4.       Diagnose,manage and document a case of sexual assault.

5.       Preparemedico-legal reports in various medico-legal situations.

SKILLS: At the end of the course,the student shall be able to –

1.       Documentand certify trauma.

2.       Diagnoseand certify death.

3.       Makelegal documents in emergency cases.

4.       Certifymedico-legal cases e.g. age estimation, sexual offence cases etc.

Forensic Medicine Department facilitates teaching of under graduate students in 2nd and 3rd year as per CBME curriculum. and guidance to the team for Post Mortem and related Medico Legal activities.

Department has

Museum: equipped with Specimens arranged ingroups as models, charts, photographs Wet specimens, weapons, bones & poisons.

Laboratory: for undergraduate students and also having research laboratory

FORENSIC MEDICINE DEPARTMENT
It is located on the3rd floor in main college building and equipped with 2 demonstration rooms(capacity 75 students each), 1 museum, 1 Laboratory (capacity 100 students) , 1departmental library, 1 research labs and office space for all teaching andnon-teaching staff. Museum is equipped with wet specimens, charts, wax models,poison set, weapon set, anthropology instruments, x-rays and  view boxes etc. Post-mortem room is situatedat the autopsy block in the hospital campus, about 40-50 meters distance fromthe medical college. About 500 medico-legal autopsy examinations are carriedout every year by the Medical Officers of Civil Hospital, Sola. It has coldstorage facilities to preserve dead bodies for short duration of time/days.

TEACHING AND TRAINING –Teachingto the 2nd MBBS and 3rd MBBS Phase 1 students is impartedthrough lectures, SGT, Practicals, Demonstraions, Tutorials and SDL. Allinterns have to undergo one week compulsory rotatory internship at the ForensicMedicine Department.

EVALUATION - Department has arobust system of formative and summative evaluation, which is in accordance tothe National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Gujarat University. Universityexamination is to be held at the end of III professional year phase 1 alongwith the subject of Community Medicine (from admission batch 2021 onwards).Internal evaluations are done regularly. 2 internal examinations are conducted in II year MBBS. Whereas oneinternal examination and one preliminary examination is conducted during IIIyear phase 1. By passing in the internal evaluations, the student becomeseligible to appear in the university examination.
